Fleet Management and IT Asset Management RSS

 WHAT IS RSS?

RSS stands for ''Really Simple Syndication''. RSS is a format for syndicating news and updates of content for websites.

An RSS feed is a regularly updated summary of web content, along with links to full versions of that content.

RSS-aware programs called news aggregators are becoming increasingly popular in the online community. Many sites are making content available in RSS. A news aggregator can help you keep up with all your favorite sites by checking their RSS feeds and displaying new items from each of them.

Subscribing to an RSS feed is similar to subscribing to a newspaper, magazine or journal. When you subscribe to an RSS feed, every time a new article or update is published to the Web, a link to it is added to your reader.

HOW DO YOU BENEFIT FROM USING RSS?

RSS allows you to receive freshly updated content. A big benefit is that you choose content of interest, totally controlling the flow of information you receive.

Typically, RSS feeds contain news headlines and content summaries. The content summaries contain enough information without overwhelming you. If you are interested and want additional information you can click on the item in the feed, accessing the website which contains additional details.

RSS feeds can be classified into different categories which enables you to choose the information that is relevant to you. If you see a site of interest and it has a little orange button similar to this - - indicating that the site syndicates its content you can be kept informed. The breadth of information contained in RSS feeds means that there is a feed for almost anyone.

  • Outside of Work it may be one of your interests - perhaps a hobby, finance, sport or news.
  • For work RSS can provide information on issues facing your industry or possible solutions to an area of concern

RSS can reduce research time by keeping you up to date with choosen sites you have visited.

If you are using FireFox - Live Bookmarks are the easiest way to view our RSS information. It uses your bookmarks toolbar or bookmarks menu. With one glance, quickly see the latest headlines from your favorite sites. Go directly to the articles that interest you—saving you time. A site is enabled for Live Bookmarks when you see this icon on the bottom right corner of the browser. Clicking on the icon and selecting an RSS feed will bring up the Add Bookmark dialog. Select 'OK' and you will see Live Bookmarks with the rest of your bookmarks. Many people find it especially convenient to save Live Bookmarks in their Bookmarks Toolbar folder.
